Marimekko Oiva – Iso Unikko coffee cup, 2 dl, white – dark blue

Marimekko’s Iso Unikko cup is decorated with the iconic flower pattern designed by Maija Isola in a giant size (the name Iso Unikko translates to “big poppy”). The ceramic cup is part of the Oiva tableware range, designed by Sami Ruotsalainen, and is easily combinable with monochrome dishware as well as other Marimekko patterns. All fans of Finnish design surely recognize Unikko, but have you ever heard the story behind the pattern? Maija Isola created it in 1964 after Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had publicly announced that no floral fabrics would be printed at the design house. Isola did not accept these rules and restrictions without a fight and, in protest, ended up designing an entire collection of bold floral patterns. One of these designs was Unikko – which quickly became a favorite of Ratia, too. Today, Unikko is one of Marimekko’s best-known and most beloved patterns worldwide.
